In the constant ebb and flow of life, we often find ourselves caught in a web of resistance—resistance to change, to challenges, and to the unexpected. This resistance can stem from fear, ego, or a simple desire to control outcomes. However, the more we resist the natural rhythms of life, the more we invite suffering and discontent. By learning to embrace acceptance and go with the flow, we unlock the potential for happiness, growth, and peace. While there may be safety in the familiar there is little growth, for it is through unforeseen challenges that we really grow and learn. ‘Your trials did not come to punish you, but to awaken you’, Paramahansa Yogananda.

The Struggle of Resistance

Resistance arises when we cling to how things "should" be rather than acknowledging how they are. It manifests in various forms: resisting change, avoiding discomfort, or fighting against situations that are beyond our control. While it’s human to strive for improvement or to feel discomfort in adversity, chronic resistance leads to frustration, anxiety, and stagnation.

Imagine a tree in a storm. A rigid tree that refuses to bend with the wind risks breaking, while a supple tree sways and survives. The same principle applies to us. When we resist life's inevitable storms, we risk emotional and mental breakdowns, but if we adapt and flow, we grow stronger and more resilient.

The Power of Acceptance

Acceptance is not about resignation or passivity; it’s about acknowledging reality as it is, without judgment or denial. It’s about finding peace with circumstances, understanding that some things are beyond our control, and focusing our energy on what we can change. It’s not about what happened to us but rather it’s about our response to what happened.

‘The world we live in is the world we choose to live in, whether consciously or unconsciously. If we choose bliss, that’s what we get. If we choose misery, we get that too.’  Tony Robbins.

Acceptance frees us from the exhausting cycle of “what-ifs” and “if-only’s.” It allows us to live in the present moment, where true happiness resides. By accepting life’s imperfections and uncertainties, we cultivate inner peace and clarity.

Going With the Flow

To “go with the flow” means to align with life’s natural currents rather than swimming against them. This doesn’t mean abandoning your goals or values; rather, it’s about approaching life with flexibility and openness.

Going with the flow involves:

  1. Letting Go of Control: Recognize that not everything is within your power. Surrendering control doesn’t mean giving up; it means trusting the process and adapting as needed.

  1. Embracing Change: Life is ever-changing. Clinging to the past or fearing the future only blocks us from enjoying the present. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth.

  1. Practicing Mindfulness and Meditation: mindfulness and meditation teach us to observe our thoughts and emotions, to let go and return to the present moment. This allows us to release judgment, helping us respond to life’s challenges with grace rather than with resistance.

  1. Finding Gratitude: Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant. It fosters contentment and encourages us to see the beauty in life, even during difficult times.

The Key to Happiness

Buddhism teaches that all suffering is caused by attachment. This refers to our tendency to attach to people, things or ideas in the mistaken belief that they will bring us happiness. This, however merely creates limitation and longing.  It is by cultivating acceptance and flowing with life’s currents that we pave the way to happiness. When we stop resisting, we conserve emotional energy and open ourselves up to joy and connection. Life becomes less about struggle and more about exploration.

True happiness stems from harmony—within ourselves and with the world around us. By bending with life’s winds, we develop resilience, adaptability, and inner peace. We become like the flexible tree that not only survives storms but thrives afterward.

Happiness is not about controlling every aspect of life; it’s about accepting life as it comes and finding beauty in its unpredictability. Resistance may feel like strength, but true strength lies in flexibility and flow. When we stop fighting against life and start embracing it, we unlock the door to lasting peace and fulfilment. Acceptance isn’t surrender—it’s empowerment, the key to living a happy, harmonious life.

I would like to leave you with some lines from Rudyard Kipling's beautiful poem 'If' which encapsulates the principle of acceptance.

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim,

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same,

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools.
